You can remove the gas tank, then pull flywheel cover, you will see the starter bendix, with your fingers turn it back and forth you will see how it pushes out when turned. chances are it went bad. if you have an air impact wrench the flywheel bolt is easy to remove. This causes the bendix to stick/hang up on the shaft in the disengage position, the fix is remove the starter then the bendix from the starter shaft. Set the bottom of the bendix on a sheet of sand paper on a flat surface, sand the bottom until it's flat again then re-assemble. I have a John Deere L110 (almost 3 yrs). After sitting idle most of the winter, I went to start it up and got nothing. Nov 16, 2011 · 65Coupe. There is a solenoid mounted on the starter that, when energized, engages the rotating gear with the ring on the flywheel. You can bench test this with a 12V battery to make sure this solenoid is working, and the gear is extending/retracting. If this is working, then you need to check the clearance between the starter and flywheel.
